Taking Control of Your Family’s Health

Quite often, it can feel like we have no control over our own and our family’s health, meaning every member of the family is at the mercy of germs, microbes and other airborne agents. Do you care about your health, body, mind and spirit and those of your family? It’s time to pay attention to the wellness trend.

Wellness is about living healthy and making sure you’ve got the strength to enjoy the things you love the most. For your family to achieve its health goals, you all need to make long-term commitments and practice healthy behaviours.

It’s not possible to prevent all injuries or illnesses that could happen, but you can make certain choices in order to protect your whole family’s health.

Get Enough Sleep

Getting enough sleep should be a top priority for all members of your family. Adults need, on average, seven to eight hour’s of sleep, while children need differing amounts depending on their age.

If you’re not enjoying enough sleep, it increases the risk of heart disease, obesity, cancer and depression. For your kids, it’s going to make them irritable and unable to concentrate. If family members aren’t getting enough sleep, any other healthy lifestyle choices you make will lose their effectiveness.

Schedule Regular Check-Ups

Regular health check-ups are important for preventing disease and detecting problems early. Making sure you all have regular check-ups at the doctor are one of the simplest ways to take control of your family’s health.

The NHS offers regular health checks that are designed to look for risk factors and early signs of diseases, the most common of which are heart disease or cancer. Regular eye and dental checks should also be undertaken for all members of the family.

Protect Your Skin

Sun exposure and sunburn is linked to skin cancer, so it’s important to limit your time in the sun. You might not think it’s an issue living in the UK; after all, the sun doesn’t shine too often. Nevertheless, even on overcast days, the suns UV rays can be harmful.

Try to wear protective clothing, hats and sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher. Polarised sunglasses will protect your eyes from the damaging and harmful rays of the sun. Regularly check family members for signs of skin cancer and visit your GP if you’re worried about anyone in your family.

Improve the Family Lifestyle

If you want to take control of your family’s health, the best way to do it is to choose a healthy lifestyle. That means eating a healthy diet and getting regular exercise. Both of these will help keep everyone’s weight, blood sugar level, blood pressure and cholesterol level within a healthy range.

Aim to eat a variety of fruits, vegetables and lean or low-fat protein sources. Limit the amount of added sugars, sodium and trans-fats. As a family, you should be getting at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise five days per week, plus muscle-strengthening activities twice a week.

To ensure your family’s health is protected, taking supplements, such as those offered by swanson.co.uk, is a great way to keep check of the vitamin and minerals everyone is receiving per day. Ginger & Turmeric capsules, for example, are ideal for helping muscles, joints, bones and stomach issues.

Your health and the health of everyone in your family is important. Taking control of it can mean the difference between prevention and treatment.

Exante: Why I love them even more the 2nd time around!

If you follow me on Instagram then you will have seen me share a big box of goodies that were delivered from Exante. This was over 2 weeks ago now and since then I’ve been following my new plan as much as possible.

If you’re a reader of mine from way back when, you will know I have worked with Exante in the past and 2nd time round, they lived up to my high expectations. Exante plans are flexible and easy to follow and are perfect for someone wanting to lose weight, change their eating habits or even trying to tone up if you’re one for home workouts or hitting the gym.

*gifted 2 week plan*

I started my 2 week trial a couple of weeks ago and it states that it can be enjoyed as part of a healthy balanced diet therefore this is the way I chose to integrate it into my routine.

I opted to have a shake for my lunches at work and alternated between the different flavours. I can honestly say they are delicious and I really enjoyed them all (including the banana which normally would not be the one!).

I found it hard to stick to 2 shakes a day so I had a small portion of porridge in the morning as well as a couple of portions of fruit throughout the day alongside my snack bars.

After 2 weeks I’ve found my appetite for snacking has decreased rapidly and no longer do I want to indulge in huge sharing bags of crisps. Don’t get me wrong, we’ve still enjoyed a takeaway one night and the odd snack but I’ve definitely felt my trousers getting a little looser over the last 2 weeks and that’s the best part for me.

Now let’s face facts here.

I stepped on the scale on Sunday 24th expecting a whopper loss and instead was met with a gain. I felt crap if I’m honest until my husband reminded me that the scales aren’t everything and my increase in exercise will have built muscle in the meantime. Quickly I realised that although the scales weren’t what I envisioned, my clothes felt less snug and I felt better in myself. Confidence is key and I definitely think having the Exante products in my life has helped me really adapt my eating habits to be that bit healthier and feel better when I look in the mirror.

Will I carry on with the Exante way of life?

I absolutely want to keep going with these fab products, the snack bars and shakes are yummy and have really kept me going at work on busy days. I also received some soups and meals which I’ve liked but not loved. I really love the shakes and when I went onto the web site, I found even more flavours I hadn’t tried. Needless to say I can’t wait to get my hands on these and give them a try.

Fancy trying the products for yourself?

Switching up my breakfast

Lately I’ve been trying to get a bit healthier with my diet and lifestyle and it made sense to start with the first meal of the day; Breakfast.

I’ve always gone for the easy option and bungled a bit of bread in the toaster then ran out the door for work once eaten or a bowl of cereal that’s full of sugar. Having hated muesli and granola as a kid, I never took the plunge in trying them again until recently.

After trying granola and realising I absolutely love it, I decided to venture into the world of Muesli and see what it had to offer. My brand of choice for my first dabble came in the form of Moma. I’ve tried some of these products before and absolutely love their porridge range, so I thought I’ give their DIY Bircher Muesli a go.

Bircher Muesli for those of you that are wondering; is an oat mix with fruits and seeds. Moma use gluten-free oats in their products which is a huge plus for me as too much makes my stomach all funny. This Bircher Muesli is raspberry and coconut and contains raisins, apple, sunflower seeds, coconut flakes, desiccated coconut, raspberries and blackcurrant as well as their usual gluten-free oats.

Now the reason it’s called DIY Bircher Muesli is because it’s great for those of us that don’t have a lot of time in our morning routines. Here’s 3 ways the folks at Moma recommend trying this product:

  1. Just add milk or a dairy free alternative (1 minute to make)
  2. Add to a bowl and mix with either yoghurt or apple juice and leave it to soak (5 minutes to make)
  3. As above but if you have more time you could grate some apple of add more chopped up fruits (10 minutes to make)

I’ve only tried mine with almond milk so far but would give it 10/10 for taste and texture. Next on my list to try it to pop some apple juice in and leave them to soak and see what they can do.

I would definitely recommend Moma and their DIY Bircher Muesli if you’re looking for a healthier alternative for your breakfast routine. If you have any other recommendations then please drop me a comment below.
