Why I love a Paraben-free Shampoo

For several years now, I have suffered with itchy scalp syndrome. I don’t know what triggers it or whether it’s genuinely something medical but I always get an itchy scalp and find it a little flaky and rather ugly-looking.

I’ve tried and tested what seems like hundreds of shampoos now and finally moved onto paraben free options. When I got the opportunity to test and review one of the shampoos, naturally I jumped at the chance.

They recently launched their Brave Botanicals range so I decided to review the Lavender & Jasmine Body & bounce shampoo to try to give my hair a much-needed boost and see if this paraben free option finally settled my scalp.

As soon as it arrived in the post, I started putting it to the test washing my hair every couple of days and using my normal everyday conditioner alongside it. The shampoo is clear in colour and lathers up really nicely when water is applied.

After a couple of uses I definitely say a reduction in my flaky scalp, it didn’t disappear and there was still some itchiness but it wasn’t as severe as usual. However after a couple of weeks it started to come back which could just be my scalp getting used to the shampoo too much which does tend to happen to me.

My hair was definitely a lot bouncier and had a lot more body. It’s pretty frizzy/wavy anyway which you think means I don’t need more body but surprisingly, it can look really flat and lacklustre a lot of the time.

Faith in nature use lots of natural ingredients in their shampoos and have an incredible range as well. Not only do they offer amazing shampoos, they also offer other hair care, body care, skin care, body care, home care and even pet care. It’s on my list to try out some of their skin care next as I think the fact that they are SLS and Paraben free will give my skin the much-needed boost it deserves.

Overall I am really impressed with the brand and can’t wait to buy some more of their lovely free from products. It’s difficult to know what you should and shouldn’t avoid when it comes to extensive lists of ingredients but this has given me the knowledge to start targeting my skin and scalp problems a lot more and hopefully give me the results going forward as well.

Let me know in the comments if you have tried anything Paraben free before and if you have any recommendations for me that would be fab.

That time Rush York did my hair

People: “Wow your hair looks different! What have you done different?”

Me: “Erm I brushed it!”

Yes this is a prime example of real life hair related conversations I have to go through. My hair is naturally wavy, thick and brunette. If I can avoid doing much to it, I will and that includes running a brush through it.

I can hear you all gasping or recoiling in horror of the very thought of my unbrushed hair venturing to work every day but my hair has very seldom been the pride of my life. I’ve had it long/short/dyed/natural and every so often I’ll dabble with the straighteners/curlers or a braid.

When Rush York contacted me offering the chance of a treatment and the opportunity to review their new salon, I jumped at the chance for my hair to have a treat and actually make a little effort for a change.

The day after I flew home from Lanzarote I trotted off (not literally trotted like a horse), into York to meet the lovely Jessica owner and franchisee of the Rush York salon.

I was greeted warmly by the lovely Jessica who is both owner and stylist, and Becky who is also a stylist in the salon as well. Jessica sat me down in the gorgeous surroundings and talked about the blow dry I would be getting that day and how I liked to style my hair normally. I’d never had one before so it was a lovely treat to try something new and see what I thought about the service as well.

Becky took me through the back of the salon to the sinks where they wash clients hair and due to staff illness, Becky was stepping in to do hair washing duties as well. It was lovely getting to feel the Kerastase products on my hair. It was a good opportunity to chat to Becky and to find out about her life and working at the salon. She was really gentle and very chatty so made me feel at ease as well.

After my hair was scrubbed clean and I felt refreshed, I sat back down in the stylist chair where I was greeted with a cafetière of Coffee, milk, sugar and biscuits. This is a great touch and even though it’s only something small, it really impressed me.

Jessica then started drying and styling my hair whilst telling me lots about herself and her life which was lovely. I’ve been to other salons before where stylists have pretty much stayed quiet the whole time even when you ask questions and it’s generally put me off going back again.

After drying was done, Jessica got out the curlers and styled my hair into loose waves which was exactly what I asked for. She showed me throughout what she was doing and talked me through the products as she went along as well which was great. Since I know I need to make an effort more with my hair, I have made it my mission to learn more about good products for my hair.

The whole experience was lovely and I was made to really welcome by Jessica, Becky and later Charlotte who is the salon’s receptionist and who Jessica can’t praise enough. Compared to some big name salons out there, I found this to be around the same in terms of prices but miles ahead in terms of service. The ladies in the salon are fabulous, and if you are on the lookout for a new salon in York especially, I would thoroughly suggest you give Rush a visit.

Garnier Ultimate Blends Delicate Soother Shampoo

I hate my scalp…. It’s not a secret that my scalp is my arch nemesis and we fall out a lot of the time!

It may seem like a bold statement but my scalp is super sensitive to nearly everything and trying to find shampoos, conditioners, hair masks that don’t irritate it more, just becomes a chore nowadays.

I’ve tried and tested so many products out since the start of the year but don’t get me wrong, I don’t exactly give up after a couple of washes. I slog out the tried and tested rule and try it for a few weeks to see the full effects and a lot of the time, I’m left disappointed with the results.

After purchasing one of the latest offerings from Garnier’s Ultimate Blends collection, I decided to put it to the test and share my results. I decided to buy the Ultimate Blends Delicate Soother Shampoo after seeing an advert on the tv talking about soothing the scalp. I was hoping it was going to be the shampoo of my dreams and the answer to all my problems.

Made with rice cream and oat milk, this shampoo is a gorgeous pearlescent colour and looks rich and nourishing when you pour it out to use it. The purpose of the ingredients are to help reduce itchiness in the scalp, leaving your hair with a lightweight feeling and avoiding to weigh down the scalp.

I have to admit my hair has been super soft and healthy looking whilst I have been using it which is always a plus. My hair hasn’t been dry feeling which a lot of medicated shampoos normally do to me. I also noticed a reduction in the dandruff/dry scalp that used to appear in my hair.

Now I haven’t had a lot of dry scalp problems lately but have suffered immensely with itchy scalp. I would say after using the shampoo for a 3-4 weeks now, I have noticed a lot less tightness in my scalp and hairline and only the odd bit of itchy feeling going on. It hasn’t cured me by any means so don’t expect a miracle product but everything works differently on different people and in my situation, my scalp just hates me.

I tend to alternate my shampoos every so often as they just start having adverse effects on my hair so I try to mix it up with Neutrogena T-Gel for a medicated dose on my scalp.

I’ve had a scout round again and found Wilko is selling this shampoo at a bargain £1.90. This is normally £3+ so this is a great reduction in price and should be snapped up soon if it’s something you want to try for yourself.

Feel free to leave any shampoo-related reviews you’ve written/posted about so I can check them out for the future.
