How to Create an Atmosphere in Your Home

If you’ve ever wandered around a furniture store, longing to sink into the nearest comfy sofa, you’ll know what we mean by atmosphere. It’s something interior designers have been nailing for years – that certain something that makes a room feel a certain way.

There are so many ways you can create the vibe you want in your home. Here are just a few ideas.

Consider the colour

Okay, so this is an obvious suggestion to start off with, but it’s an important one. For example, if you want to create a relaxing ambiance, vibrant red or yellow won’t do the job; but if you’re looking for a fun, invigorating space, then they’re great colours to choose.

Generally speaking, deep reds, browns and purples create a rich, inviting atmosphere. Blues and greens are calming colours. Anything bright is going to make people feel uplifted. And white is the perfect blank canvas if you want to focus on furniture and fabrics instead.

Alternatively, you could go for a huge mural – it’s a great focal point, and immediately makes a room more interesting.

What about textures?

The texture of furniture can totally change the feeling of a room. Rough wood (for example) gives a more cosy, rural atmosphere, whereas polished, smooth wood feels more luxurious.

As for those soft furnishings? If you want to create a living area that makes people want to blissfully relax, faux fur or velvet cushions are ideal. Big, deep sofas will also create a more laid-back ambiance, whereas high-backed, shallow sofas are more ‘social’ and upbeat.

Introduce period elements

A few period items, like a Victorian fireplace (reclaimed ones are excellent if you’re on a budget and don’t mind cleaning it up) or fake beams can transform a room. Fake brick walls are also amazing; they make a space look homely and welcoming. Likewise, wallpaper can make a room feel completely different too.

Think about the flooring

The floor often gets overlooked when thinking about how to create mood in your home. However, it can make a big difference. Bare floorboards are rustic and inviting, and polished dark floorboards are sophisticated. A big fluffy rug immediately makes the space feel more cosy, and a thick carpet adds warmth and comfort.

Get all the senses involved

The visual elements of the room are very important. But make sure you don’t forget to appeal to the other senses too. For example, lots of tactile fabrics like velvet and satin add opulence and mystery. A fire crackling away merrily can evoke lots of powerful memories, which immediately creates a welcoming atmosphere.

You shouldn’t forget scent either. Lavender is wonderful for relaxation, whereas citrus smells are good for reinvigoration. Perfumes provide good inspiration – sites like Copycat Fragrances have some great scented candles too.

Experiment, experiment, experiment!

Sometimes, it takes a while to get the room looking and feeling right. You might need to play around with the layout and the décor. This is all part of the process – so enjoy it! Eventually you’ll hit on the perfect atmosphere and then your house will really start to feel like a home.

Regardless of whether or not you love a particular style, if you don’t feel confident and comfortable in it, don’t wear it! There’s nothing more disheartening than feeling self-conscious throughout a party and wanting to hide away in a corner. To have you feeling and looking incredible, you can find beautiful plus size outfits or the perfect pair of relaxed jeans and boots from the comfort of your living room.

With that in mind, the festive season is a time for glitz and glamour, so don’t shy away from sequins and glitter! However, if this will make you feel like a Strictly Come Dancing contestant, why not opt for velvet instead? Velvet dresses are a luxurious addition to any wardrobe.
