World Heart Day with a little help from Herbalife

Yes that’s right its World Heart Day meaning we should stop and take a day to appreciate and look after that organ that helps us all to live our lives.

I won’t spend this blog post preaching at your as I am no Saint when it comes to looking after my heart, but want to share some top tips, heart friendly foods and products with you to hopefully us all look after our hearts that bit more.

Not only is it World Heart Day, but it’s also the day that Herbalife Nutrition launch their new Beta Heart product. A Vanilla flavoured powder that contains the ingredient OatWell oat beta-glucan. This has been shown to reduce/maintain blood cholesterol hopefully lowering the risk of heart disease in some people. It’s recommended to take 1 or 2 scoops per day mixed with water, fruit juice or added to a formula 1 shake.

This is Herbalife’s commitments to inspire communities around the world to live healthy active lifestyles and they will also be launching new formulations of a couple of their existing products which will promote a healthier heart as well.

If you don’t know about Herbalife already (I’ll admit I had limited knowledge before now) they are a global nutrition company that has over 8000 employees worldwide. They provide nutrition, weight-management, energy and fitness and personal care products which are exclusively available to and through dedicated Herbalife members in over 90 countries.

I was excited to receive my healthy heart box in the post last week containg the Beta Heart product, a sundae/shake glass, a huge bag of oats, bag of dates and a cute red and white straw.



The box was sent to me to whip up a delicious breakfast or shake of my own using the newest addition from herbalife and I was definitely excited.


I decided to whip up a huge bowl of porridge as per the instructions on the bag and added a scoop of the Beta Heart in before microwaving. I’m not a huge shake person generally so trying to create something yummy like that would be a bit out of my comfort zone hence why the porridge instead. Once made I put a little dollop of Nutella on the top to melt in (I know that’s not so healthy) but it made it a little sweeter as porridge after a while can be a little dull to enjoy.

The porridge was yummy and at no point did I taste anything powdery or feel like I was eating a health product. I loved the porridge oats and the Beta Heart smelt lovely as well before adding it in.

Now you’ve seen my creation it’s time to share some tips on this; World Heart Day!

Things you can do to look after your heart..

Fuel your heart – try not to eat too many processed foods, cut down on sugary beverages, swap sweets for fruit, make your own lunches, eat 5 portions of fruit and veg a day at least and do not drink in excess a lot.

Move you heart – aim for 5x30minutes of activity a week, download an exercise app to track your progress, remember even housework counts towards staying active.

Love your heart – stop smoking! Easier said than done I’m sure but it has huge benefits to your heart and life.

Not sure what foods to eat than can help lower cholesterol?

How about Soya? it’s low in saturated fats and definitely helps lower cholesterol. I use soya or almond milk now as I can’t have dairy and I feel better for it.

Nuts are rich in protein, fibre, unsaturated fats and vitamin E giving you huge overall benefits for your whole body.

Oats & Barley are always good options in order to have a healthy diet.

Fruit and Veg: need i say more?

So to round up this post I can safely say I want to look after myself more. Now we have our own house and are in charge of buying our own food, it’s easier to look after our diets and manage what we do and don’t have in the cupboards. I won’t lie, we still have a fantastic snack cupboard full of treats but they don’t get eaten through the week and it is always a treat if we do have one. My fiance’s family have had a history of heart related issues so this day is definitely one that’s important to us both.
