The SCA Summer Cleaning Challenge

Now that I own my home, I realise how much effort it takes to actually clean a big house and how much time my mum put into keeping ours tidy before I moved out.

When I was contacted to see if I wanted to take part in the SCA summer cleaning challenge, I was more than happy to oblige and share some of my top tips and hacks for helping speed up the process of cleaning the home. I received a lovely goodie bag of products to help inspire me to create new hacks which you can see below.

002

My first hack was to make use of the compost bucket. Now we are pretty lucky enough to have a compost bucket with our local council so I didn’t really need it for that usage. Instead I decided to use it for all my pegs! Yep that’s right, it currently houses all the pegs for my washing line making it rather handy for grabbing to take out and hang clothing.

Next up is trying to find a hack for the smell from the bins. Now usually I would use regular old air freshener and just blast it every few days before giving the kitchen bin a proper clean. I received the very awesome bin buddy in my bundle which is a great citrus product which kills germs and neutralises odours in your kitchen bin. This smells awesome and is great for just shaking into the bin. I will definitely be buying this product again in the future as it really is so handy.

Another hack I use it kitchen roll and Glass spray. I find that kitchen roll works great rather than dry cloths etc which tend to leave smears. I use it all the time on our patio doors and windows as we have a fair few to clean in this house and I’d be lost without plain old kitchen roll. I’m so glad I received a giant roll of Plenty in my bundle.

My next favourite household feature is a good old-fashioned feather duster. I have some pretty high ceilings and bits of furniture that need regular dusting and we kept forgetting to buy one every time we ventured to the shops. To my amazement I received a lovely new one in the bundle which has been extremely handy for keeping cobwebs at bay and dusting everywhere.

020

In terms of cleaning my shower I always use Mr Muscle shower products and also use a kitchen scrubbing-brush to help clear grime and dirt out of the grout and tiling of the shower. I started to do this when we moved in as I was struggling to clean some of the dirt left from previous owners and this was the only thing that helped. The long bristles meant I could get right into the grout and scrub away without damaging any tiles or the grout itself. It’s my favourite cleaning tip if I’m completely honest.

015

Last up on the cleaning tips is 2 smaller suggestions in my opinion. My black and decker handheld and cleaning wipes. Cleaning wipes are not only great for wiping down surfaces or leather but are also brilliant for carpeted floor and grabbing hair from the carpet itself. It sounds weird but if you have long hair especially it can get embedded into the carpet if you aren’t careful. This is a great way of gathering up hair and also leaving your carpet smelling clean and fresh.

When it comes to the black and decker handheld, this is super useful for crevices in sofas or harder to reach parts of your room. I struggle to lift heavy furniture myself so this is great for getting under sofas or behind objects that are more difficult to reach. It’s come in very handy since we received it and I’ve used it quite a lot so far.

014

So these are my handy tips as part of the SCA summer cleaning campaign and I hope they’ve inspired you to try something different yourself.

Duvet Cover Update from Yorkshire Linen

I am not ashamed to admit that recently, I have become addicted to buying new bed linen. I went to Primark recently and treated myself to a new duvet set and got really excited about getting a new grey sheet to match. WHO AM I? WHAT HAVE I TURNED INTO? I always find myself browsing through sites and have spotted Yorkshire Linen a couple of times due to the fact that they offer reasonably priced bedding as well as curtains, cushions, home essentials and kitchen and dining homeware.

I do love when I put new bedding on the bed and it gives my room a whole new look really, I generally choose darker colours or even white/grey bedding. When the lovely people at Yorkshire Linen asked to work with me, I was able to choose some new bedding to review at home. This beautiful stag print duvet caught my eye as I absolutely adore stags and would happily have a room dedicated to this. They were very generous and sent me a king size set which is the size of my duvet. I wish my room looked the stock photo from the site however I have no fireplace or exposed brick walls. I still like that it warmed my room up a bit and gave it a refresh.

I thought I would choose some of the site’s pieces that would help accessorize my room some more.

I think this little Bear Hug door stop is gorgeous and the beige would look fab in my room with the duvet set. I also love this check throw for over the bed, red looks fab with beige tones and makes it look very cosy and autumnal. I can’t wait to add some accessories to my room to make it look really warm and lovely.

I hope you like this post and feel inspired to change-up your bedroom colours and bed linen.

My Dream Living Room*

As you are all aware from several tweets/blog posts, I am currently attempting to get my foot on the ladder and buy my first home at the age of 24! Needless to say I am saving my hardest to get the best deposit together that I can and that sometimes means going without new clothes etc, but I know it will pay off when I have my own home.

As you can imagine, I spend a lot of time combing Pinterest for home inspiration and browsing shops for bits and pieces that slowly seem to be mounting up. One area that I always fantasize about would be the living room/lounge as that’s where I picture myself cosied up watching endless amounts of Netflix and eating salad Sweets & Crisps!!! I have been browsing shops in the last few months and stumbled upon Rodgers of York. When I say stumbled, I knew it was there but I always anticipated that everything they stocked would be way out of my price range. I was pleasantly surprised when I realised that they have a fantastic range and so much of it is affordable for a first time buyer like myself. I have decided to create a moodboard of my fantasy living room using some of the fab collection from Rodgers of York as well as some other homewares that I love.

First up I created a Neutral Inspired moodboard with a gorgeous cream sofa with soft yellow and grey furnishings. I selected wood flooring in a grey colour as I think it really compliments the colours of the furniture and the wallpaper etc. All the items can be found at Rodgers of York from some of the amazing suppliers that they stock in store.

I decided to create a second moodboard with a more country/checked feel to it. I would love this in my home with lots of stag print cushions etc. I already have a model stag head which was a gift for christmas last year and can’t wait to buy my home so I can put it up.

Once again, all the products are stocked through Rodgers of York and I absolutely love all the dark hues. I adore the pale wallpaper with the world print on it like a treasure map, this is something I would love in my home. The sofa looks super comfy and with some pale wool cushions on there or terracotta, I think it would make it even comfier.

So needless to say, I spent a fair amount of time trudging around Rodgers earlier this year getting lots and lots of inspiration. I even went up and down the carpet section checking them all out! Normally I’m not a fan of home or DIY shopping but since I have buying my home top of my agenda at the moment then it seems fitting to spend lots of time browsing the shops! If you haven’t been to Rodgers of York before then I suggest checking this lovely place out. It’s located at Monks Cross in York and from the outside doesn’t look that big but it’s a real Tardis inside and has sooo much for you to choose from.

I am also loving block wooden furniture at the moment like dining sets etc and if you are looking for some fab pieces then check out the Trade Furniture Company who have some fabulous wooden pieces with some great Indian inspired furniture.

I hope you liked my home inspiration. Have you done any moodboards like this recently?
